Carlson Lecture
Greenland Ice Cores Tell Tales of Past Sea Level Change

Hosted by MIT Department of Earth, Atmospheric and Planetary Sciences

Date: Wednesday, October 23
Time:
6:30pm to 7:30pm
Location:
In person at the Simons Theatre, New England Aquarium, Central Wharf, Boston – OR – via live stream with pre-registration.

The Lorenz Center of EAPS at MIT is pleased to present the 2024 John H. Carlson Lecture, in partnership with the New England Aquarium and the Lowell Institute: Greenland Ice Cores Tell Tales of Past Sea Level Change

FEATURING
Professor Dorthe Dahl-Jensen
of the Centre for Earth Observation Sciences, University of Manitoba, and the Centre for Ice and Climate at the Niels Bohr Institute, University of Copenhagen

Come hear Dr. Dahl-Jensen, discuss one of our challenges for the future: adapting to a rising sea level. She studies the Greenland Ice Sheet—the largest ice mass in the Northern Hemisphere—which is reacting to climate change by progressively losing more mass every year. Her research examines the past to provide insights into how the ice sheets will react to a changing climate and to improve future predictions of sea level rise. Dr. Dahl-Jensen will discuss the period between glaciations, 130,000 to 115,000 years ago—a period holding key clues for understanding our future climate. She will also share new results on the flow of ice sheets from deep ice core drilling in Northeast Greenland.

Free and open to the public. Students and families welcome. Doors open at 5:30pm with exhibits from MIT students and climate scientists in the Simons Theatre lobby.
